Club History
The Club’s history through its Southport origins dates back to 1883, making it one of the oldest clubs on the Gold Coast and Queensland. Southport Cricket Club, then known as ‘Wharehouse’, commenced with its home ground at Owen Park, Southport, which was also the home of Gold Coast trotting and greyhound racing, the Gold Coast Show and the Southport Australian Rules Football Club. In 1987 Southport Cricket Club moved to the Wally Frankhauser Oval and operated its clubrooms out of both the Musgrave Soccer Club and the Southport Australian Rules Football Club. The club had a name change and was referred to as the Southport Musgrave Cricket Club, however in 1993 the name changed back to Southport Cricket Club. Labrador Cricket Club was formed in 1991 and had its home base and ground at the Labrador Australian Rules Football Club. In 1995 Labrador Cricket Club moved to its new and current base of Maurice Glasman Oval, at Allied dve, Arundel. Labrador Cricket club establsihed a home of cricket to be proud of as well as being a force in the local competition. Southport and Labrador cricket clubs have won a combined total of over 30 premierships. Past players consist of Steve Monty (Qld Cricketer), John Buchanan (Qld Cricketer, Australian coach), Richie Robinson (Victoria & Australia cricket), Paul Hauff (Australian Rugby League) amongst others. The two clubs merged and became known as the Southport-Labrador Cricket Club at the commencement of the 1997-98 season. The club is an important part of the Southport and Labrador district communities and its developing as a force in the local cricket competition. The club fields teams in all 5 grades of competition within the Gold Coast and District Cricket Association with 1st and 2nd grade sides competing in the Gabba Cup Competition incorporating teams from Gold Coast, Beenleigh/Logan, and Tweed Heads Districts. The S.L.C.C also has a junior club that consists of "have a go" (under 8's), under10's through to under15's who continue to develop cricket skills for the future of this great club. In the late 90's the club achieved limited success within the lower grades. The absence of higher grade premierships only raised the hunger of many home grown talent which now fulfil a youthful top grade line up. Our youthful 1st graders won the 2003/4 Konica cup which not only included the Gold Coast but also the Beenleigh/Logan and Tweed Heads competition. An achievement that has seen the club break long droughts in a number of areas since. The club has recently won club championships and in 2004/5 and 2005/6 seasons each of the 5 grades made the finals.
Most recently the Club has continued its exceptional onfield success, with the 2008/2009 season seeing Southport Labrador minor premiers in four out of five grades, premiers in both 1st and 5th Grade and overall Club Champions of the Gold Coast Cricket District’s club competition. The club is now proudly recognised as being one of the premier clubs on the Gold Coast.
